Subject Objectives

This course provides students with general IT concepts, terminology in English and necessary skills including Grammar, Listening, Speaking and Academic Writing Skill as a means of preparing students for their future study and job in the IT environment. It also develops self-reliance, independence and initiative in the learning and working environment.

 

After this course, the students are able to:

  • Use correct basic grammatical structures in different situations with both spoken and written English.

  • Listen to computer science topics in English effectively with the deep understanding of listening comprehension skills.

  • Understand a conference in computer science.

  • Make a presentation on computer science topics and discuss after the presentation.

  • Write an account of a meeting or lecture

  • Write an essay/ article on computer science topics in a professional and academic writing style.

 

Content

Listening and Speaking

  • Developing listening comprehension skills: catching main ideas, detailed ideas…
  • Developing note-taking skills.
  • Listening to dialogues, news, presentation and lecture on general topics.
  • Focusing on dialogues, news, presentation and lecture on computer science topics.
  • Developing presentation skills and discussion skills.
  • Building vocabulary on formal and informal English.
  • Focusing on building vocabulary on computer science topics.

 

Writing

  • Reviewing basic grammatical structures.
  • Writing a summary of a lecture.
  • Writing an account of a meeting.
  • Writing a discussion essay: how to express logical and persuasive arguments with supporting ideas and evidence. 

 

Methodology

  • After listening to materials, students are expected to complete exercises given (note-taking, questions answering, gap filling, summarizing…)

  • The students are also provided with the topics/ tasks for writing, making presentation and discussion.
  • Some grammatical materials are given for self-study.

  • In most of the lessons, the class is divided into two groups studying in two periods of 90 minutes. While one group is working with given listening or writing tasks, the other is working with given speaking tasks or listening to the teacher’s theoretical review. Then the students of two group swap the tasks.

      

Assessment

Small Tests (2):         10% (Listening: 5% & Writing: 5%)

Midterm Test:            20% (Listening: 5%, Speaking: 10% and Writing: 5%)

Assignment:               20% (Writing)

Final examination:      50% (Listening: 20%, Speaking: 20% and Writing: 10%)
